Artwork Details

The elephants of Victoria Falls are facing a severe ecological crisis due to plastic pollution, with 230 tonnes of waste contaminating their habitat each month. This pollution leads to a painful condition called plasticosis as elephants scavenge for food, increasing human-animal conflict and aggression.

In response, Ardmore Founder Fée Halsted and a team of artists have created a powerful art installation featuring large ceramic elephants made from natural clay. These sculptures symbolize the elephants’ health and their struggle against pollution, with monkeys depicted rummaging through bins on their heads to illustrate the absurdity of the situation.

The elephants start with minimal colour to represent their original state but become increasingly vibrant and patterned as they consume more plastic, reflecting the toxicity of plasticosis. This artwork aims to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the elephants and their habitat, while also highlighting recycling initiatives taken by Ele-Collection in Zimbabwe that turn plastic waste into products, creating jobs and benefiting local communities.
